Course Overview

As a chemistry teacher, you’ll transform your existing knowledge of how matter works into a format which can be understood by and spark the interest of secondary school pupils. You’ll also train to teach general science, comprising physics, biology and chemistry, to lower school pupils.

One of the highlights of the PGDE course for many student teachers is attending the residential Scottish Universities’ Science School (SUSS), where you will meet student teachers of science from other Scottish Universities. SUSS offers an excellent opportunity to begin networking with other future science teachers.

General Eligibility

Degree requirements

An ordinary degree or international equivalent.

Degree must include:

  • At least 80 SCQF credits in chemistry with module content to cover the following subjects:

    • Organic chemistry

    • Physical chemistry

    • Inorganic chemistry

Maths & English

  • Higher (SCQF Level 6) English Grade C or above.

  • National 5 (SCQF Level 5) Mathematics Grade C or above.

Part Time Work Details

20 hours of work permit weekly for international students.

  • IELTS 6.5 (no individual test score below 5.5)
