Course Overview

Economics at Essex is a home for the tenacious and bold. We encourage you to ask difficult questions so you can work with us to break intellectual boundaries and pioneer new solutions to issues of global concern. Learning modern language on top of this offers you a distinct advantage over colleagues in the public or private sector. Speaking more than one language not only develops your confidence to travel and work internationally but also allows you to communicate with co-workers from all over the world.

Our course gives you a thorough introduction to all aspects of economics, including micro and macroeconomics, and qualitative and mathematical research methods. Examine the decisions of individuals, the strategies of firms, and the policies of individuals to understand and challenge the standard rules of economics.

Alongside this, you also study a language, choosing from French, German, Italian or Portuguese, which allows you to graduate at either Proficiency or Mastery Level. Throughout your course, a growing understanding of economic concepts is matched by your increasing competence with your chosen language.

General Eligibility

UK entry requirements

GCSE: Mathematics B/5

A-levels: ABB

BTEC: DDM, depending on the subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided.

IB: 30 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555. Either must include Standard Level Mathematics grade 5, or a minimum of 3 in Higher Level Mathematics. We will accept grade 5 in either Standard Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Standard Level Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.

We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Levels. Please note that Maths in the IB is not required if you have already achieved GCSE Maths at grade B/5 or above or 5 in IB Middle Years Maths. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard levels, and the course applied for. Please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for more information.

Access to HE Diploma:15 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 30 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on the subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided.

20 hours per week.

Language Requirement

  • If you do not require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK then we will assess your English language proficiency/ability at your interview or audition.

    If your first language is not English and you are an international student that requires a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK then you will need IELTS 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component.
