Childrens nursing is a family affair and happens in many different places. One day you could be nursing newborn babies in the hospital, supporting the parents as they learn to care for their sick baby. Another day you could be supporting an adolescent prior to an appendix operation, or performing a procedure in the home of a child with complex care needs, or supporting a young person with emotional difficulties in a clinic situation. In all cases, the child, young person, and their families will feel vulnerable and be experiencing anxiety, a loss of control, and even frustration. It will be your job to work with them to answer questions and gain their confidence in your clinical abilities and patient care plan. Youll study a wide range of topics including anatomy and physiology, children and young peoples nursing practice, mental health, and wellbeing of children, medicines management, and complex care in the community.
