This course is distinctive as it combines the more traditional subjects of electrical engineering with the more recent advances in power electronics and computer control. Many modern electrical installations include advanced machine drives which are computer-controlled for optimized performance and efficiency. The course provides insight into these and prepares the graduate to meet the challenges of advanced power engineering systems. It offers common modules at level 4 setting the background and covers electrical machines, power electronics, and electrical services to buildings, etc. at L5 to serve as an intermediate for more advanced treatment of related topics at L6. At L6 more detailed power systems engineering, electrical energy converters, as well as systems for (built) environmental services, are covered alongside a comprehensive module on renewable energy. The combination of these modules will enable graduates to acquire knowledge of, and skills to apply, in the modern Electrical Power engineering area, which encompasses not only traditional power systems and electrical energy conversion but also electrical systems in the building services area and the use and application of power electronics in designing systems for renewable energy.
