Lecturers at University Centre Shrewsbury have specialist knowledge and research experience in human, animal, plant, and microbial organisms. You will also be taught by visiting lecturers from academia and industries – including the NHS – who are leaders in their respective fields.
You will cover a wide range of topics to support and extend your knowledge. The theory will then become more applied as you progress into Years 2 and 3. At this point, you will have the option to specialize in one of the three key thematic areas of modern bioscience – animal, plant, or microbial systems – since the modules offered in Years 2 and 3 provide the flexibility for you to build a bespoke course that meets your interests.
The options to study a more broad range of topics are also available, allowing those who would prefer a more interdisciplinary approach to bioscience to still tailor their own degree and set them up for a broader range of careers or to provide a strong foundation for postgraduate study.
The development of specific skills such as biochemical analysis, cell culture, aseptic technique, genetic analysis, and microscopy will be grounded in core bioscience skills such as critical analysis, data analysis, and experimental design.
The department has links with local industries, biotech companies, and agricultural industries, plus several research groups based at University Centre Shrewsbury, allowing for networking opportunities for students.
