MSc Mathematics

Course Overview

Our MSc Mathematics offers you the chance to study a range of modules in pure and applicable mathematics that are taught by active researchers. Depending on your choices, you will take either seven or eight modules, allowing you to study several different topics in-depth, and to focus on the areas that interest you most. You will also learn the methods of mathematical research: how to read mathematical papers and how to communicate mathematics, both in written form for your project dissertation, and orally when you give presentations about your project. You will acquire the skills to pursue your interest in the subject, either formally with a research degree, or informally with independent reading. You will come to us as someone with a mathematics degree; you will graduate as a mathematician. Our students appreciate the flexibility of this programme and the valuable support and direct interaction (face-to-face or online) with experienced lecturers who are also active researchers at the forefront of their discipline. Whichever route you decide to take with our MSc Mathematics, you will gain access to resources for each module via our Moodle virtual learning environment, for example, typed lecture notes with worked examples and practice exercise, recordings of lectures, opportunities for interaction with lecturers, and classmates via discussion forums or through our online teaching platform, Blackboard Collaborate. You will also have access to electronic textbooks and other digital resources via the library. In the past, we have had students successfully complete our modules remotely from as far away as Antarctica!

General Eligibility

Second-class honors degree (2:2) or above with mathematics as the main field of study. Applicants with an undergraduate degree in another quantitative subject may be able to take Birkbecks Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma in Mathematics as a qualifying course.
