Course Overview

Our Postgraduate Diploma in History of Photography enables you to learn about - and to negotiate your individual path through - past and present photographic practices and cultures, in order to develop your interests, whether your engagement with the medium is academic, artistic, personal, or vocational. You will develop subject-specific and transferable research, critical and writing skills that will enhance your career opportunities in the field and beyond, whether in academia or teaching, photography as a practice, galleries, and museums, or in the media. This diploma offers you the opportunity to study with internationally recognized experts. Our teaching staff is defining the field, conducting ground-breaking research in the history and theory of photography in its various uses and manifestations. You will work closely with our staff while also benefiting from our diverse and vibrant student body of all ages and backgrounds. The teaching program is enriched by the international research culture of the History and Theory of Photography Research Centre. Financial requirement Youll need to show you have enough money to support yourself - unless youve been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months on the date of your application. How much money you need depends on where you will be studying. Youll need either: £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London If youre applying for the Doctorate Extension Scheme, and youve been in the UK for less than 12 months, you need to prove you have a total of £2,668 for courses in London, or a total of £2,046 for courses outside London. If youre boarding at a residential independent school, youll need to pay boarding fees instead. The amount you need to pay will be on your CAS. London means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs.

General Eligibility

A second-class honors degree (2:2) or above in a relevant subject or equivalent (for example, professional experience).

  • If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this program is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
