The MA in Creative and Critical Writing offers blended learning in the interconnected fields of creative writing and critical theory. Modules exploring critical debates on contemporary literature, media, and popular culture give you the opportunity to develop your critical skills, while modules and workshops in creative writing enable you to develop and hone your creative writing skills (whether in fiction or non-fiction). In addition, modules that blend the two - putting the creative and the critical in dialogue - allow you to explore and try out hybrid forms. For the final dissertation, you develop a substantial piece of work, made up of either two interconnected creative and critical portions, or one hybrid creative-critical text. Teaching consists of specialist lectures and seminars, as well as practice-led workshops, and individual tutorial feedback. The MA in Creative and Critical Writing is an exciting opportunity for learning and craft in a growing field. The program will be particularly relevant for those interested in pursuing a career in writing and publishing. Possible professions include creative writer, magazine or newspaper journalist, or editorial assistant. This degree can also be useful in becoming an academic librarian, English as a second language (ESOL) teacher, or information officer.
A second-class honors degree (2:2 or above), though this requirement may be waived if you can demonstrate exceptional talent.
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this program is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 7.0, with not less than 6.5 in each of the sub-tests.
